Lu ro fan

If you have been to Taiwan, you must have tried this staple on the menu in many roadside eateries. Lu ro fan literally translates as braised meat over rice. There are two different kinds of lu ro fan. One is prepared with minced pork belly, while the other is with pork belly. The grease from the belly creates a lovely sheen making it a great topping over rice.
Lu ro fan was created back in the days when meat and condiments were scarce. Mom would chop the small portion of meat finely then braise it in a sauce to stretch it the furthest to feed more mouths. Lu ro fan is still popular to this day in Taiwan as it is one of the most economical and filling dish made available to common folks.
